Currie was appointed artist-in-residence at Southbank Centre, London, for the 2011-2012 season.

Nicholas Collon leads the Hallé Orchestra on a programme showcasing multiple award-winning composer Simon Holt's highly narrative orchestral works. His violin concerto Witness to a Snow Miracle, performed here by the prodigiously talented Chloe Hanslip, depicts the story of the life and particularly gruesome death of St. Eulalia of Merida. Holt's other award-winning concerto is a much more upbeat and quirky affair

His violin concerto witness to a snow miracle here performed by the prodigiously talented Chloë Hanslip depicts the story of the life, and particularly gruesome death, of St Eulalia of Merida. From the initial, frenzied cadenza in the solo violin we get a sense of the torment and horror the saint suffered at the hands of the Romans: her flesh torn with hooks, flames applied to the wounds, and her body buried in hot coals. Holt's other award-winning concerto on this album is a much more upbeat and quirky affair. Written for and performed on this recording by one of the world's finest percussionists, Colin Currie, a table of noises introduces us to Holt's taxidermist great uncle Ashworth, a kind of maverick tor. Currie says this percussion concerto exuberantly tears up the manual on how to approach the medium and I am thrilled with the idiosyncratic, adventurous results.

His violin concerto witness to a snow miracle – here performed by the prodigiously talented Chloë Hanslip – depicts the story of the life, and particularly gruesome death, of St Eulalia of Merida. From the initial, frenzied cadenza in the solo violin we get a sense of the torment and horror the saint suffered at the hands of the Romans: her flesh torn with hooks, flames applied to the wounds, and her body buried in hot coals. A blanket of snow fell on her ashes, at which point she was declared a saint. The short, dazzling, orchestral work St Vitus in the kettle was commissioned by BBC National Orchestra of Wales during Holt's tenure as ion (2008-2014). The grisly end for this saint was a cauldron of boiling hot lead!

Imagine a quixotic portrait of somebody’s taxidermist great-uncle. There could be musical pictures of a drawer full of eyes, or a display cabinet of stuffed animals, not to mention his dog, asleep standing up. This is Simon Holt’s affectionate, quick-witted, sometimes haunting a table of noises, for percussionist, seated at a table with multiple instruments, and orchestra. Ever ready to shine, Colin Currie is the brilliant soloist in this entertaining work, composed in 2007. Nicholas Collon also conducts the Hallé in St Vitus in the kettle and witness to a snow.

Recorded with the Hallé Orchestra, the album features percussion concerto a table of noises with soloist Colin Currie, violin concert witness to a snow miracle with soloist Chloë Hanslip, and orchestral work St Vitus in the kettle. The album showcases Holt’s highly narrative orchestral compositions. witness to a snow miracle depicts the story of the life, and particularly gruesome death, of St Eulalia of Merida, while a table of noises is inspired by Holt’s memories of a great uncle who was a one-legged taxidermist and limits the instrumentalist to the instruments they can fit on a table. The tearing, the burning 14.
