Hugh Robert Banton (born April 1949, Yeovil, Somerset) is a British organist and electronic organ builder, most widely known for his work with the group Van der Graaf Generator. Banton was born into a musical family, where his father played the piano and his mother regularly sang along to music on the radio. Two of his uncles were church organists.

In 1992 he set up his own company The Organ Workshop at Lymm in Cheshire, and latterly in Evesham, Worcestershire. Gustav Holst - The Planets (organ) (2009).

Hugh Banton (Van Der Graaf Generator) performs a solo organ rendition of Gustav Holst's The Planets suite. The Planets is Hugh's second release from the Classical repertoire played on organ, following his recording of Bach's Goldberg Variations. 1. Mars, the Bringer of War. 2. Venus, the Bringer of Peace. 3. Mercury, the Winged Messenger. 4. Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity.

Hugh Banton played the piano from an early age, and studied classical organ under Percy Saunders at Wakefield Cathedral in the 1960s. He later developed his other hobby - electronics - as an engineer at the BBC. In the 70s he played organ with rock music innovators Van der Graaf Generator and regularly built organs and electronic gadgets. Alongside this he now regularly plays with the recently reformed VdGG.
