Oddly, despite the title of the recording, Wagner: Orchestral Music from 'The Ring', the most successful reading is the Tannhauser Overture which under Tennstedt's baton draws truly eloquent playing from the orchestra. It seems an odd opening for a CD focusing on the Ring of the Niebelungen cycle, but it is a moving performance. Tennstedt's overall concept of Wagner's Ring is sound, solid, and gives amazing attention to details. For bargain Wagner shoppers, the top prize has to go to George Szell & the Cleveland Orchestra on Sony - Szell's 1960's recordings have slightly more limited sonics, but the performances are truly phenomenal - the best Wagner orchestra on the planet, and at bargain price too! The recent EMI 2 CD compilation of Otto Klemperer's take on this music is also recommended, as is that of Sir Adrian Boult.

The music can tell the story all on its own, which was the great genius of Wagner. Wagner: Die Walküre (excerpts) NY Met Opera Chorus & Orchestra/Levine DG 471678 1:56, :15, :48, 1:13, 14:50, 2:57, 2:03, 1:10, :33, 5:48, 3:07, :36, 1:38, 1:15, 15:31 Purchase. The least often opera performed by itself, Siegfried presents us with a great opportunity to explore some music that isn't heard nearly as often as the rest of the Ring cycle. This, however, does not diminish its importance to the story or its marvelous musical qualities. And for those unaware of what's going on, Bill is on hand to explain what the music is saying in addition to what the singers are saying. It's a real treat for anybody with any amount of interest in Wagner, no matter how great or little.

Epic interpretations of orchestral music from Wagner’s music dramas, conducted by James Levine. In 1991 and 1995 James Levine recorded two albums for Deutsche Grammophon of what have become known as ‘bleeding chunks’, in Ernest Newman’s phrase, from Wagner’s operas. Collected together for the first time on this Eloquence reissue, they form a comprehensive survey of overtures, preludes and excerpts, featuring many of Wagner’s bestknown melodies and most thrilling orchestral climaxes. Both the serene first-act and jubilant third-act Preludes to Lohengrin are included, as well as highlights from the Ring and the preludes to the operas he composed while on a seven-year working holiday from the Ring, Die Meistersinger and Tristan und Isolde.
