Mahler: Symphony No. 9. (CD - Deutsche Grammophon Etwas täppisch und sehr derb. Claudio Abbado, Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. 3. Rondo-Burleske: Allegro assai. In ruhig fliessender Bewegung.
Mahler’s great farewell to life is performed by Mahler’s own orchestra: the Vienna Philharmonic, conducted by Ádám Fischer. The very first bars of Mahler’s Ninth seem to falter. The stricken composer put the rhythm of his failing heart into the orchestra – and began his Ninth Symphony with a sigh of farewell. You’ll hear it all, because no orchestra understands this music more instinctively than the Vienna Philharmonic. But that’s the beginning, not the end, and over eighty minutes of music Mahler wrings every last drop of love, terror and sweetness from a life devoted to the human spirit
It is with the Second symphony by Mahler that he chooses to make his debut, at thirty-two, with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna. The Youth Orchestra he founded in 1986 bears the name of Gustav Mahler. Since then, Abbado continues to exhale the complex beauty of the Viennese composers' symphonies in all the concert halls of the world. That evening in April 2004 at the Saint Cecilia Academy in Rome, it is with the very same Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra that he conducts Mahler's last symphony that went unfinished, the Ninth Symphony
Gustav Mahler (Composer), Claudio Abbado (Conductor), Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra (Orchestra), Wiener Philharmoniker (Orchestra), Chicago Symphony Orchestra (Orchestra), Cheryl Studer (Performer), Jessye Norman (Performer), Sylvia McNair (Performer), Andrea Rost (Performer), Anne Sofie von Otter (Performer) & 7 more Format: Audio C. It is one of exellent album on Mahler Cycle. I really enjoy Symohony No. 5 by Cladio Abbado. There are many reasons to keep Mahler cycle. Nonetheless there are some gems in this set, 5, 6, and 8 in particular. Especially the sixth symphony, with Chicago Symphony Orchestra, is outstanding.

The enjoyment of Mahler's Ninth Symphony prompted the essayist Lewis Thomas to write the title essay in his Late Night Thoughts on Listening to Mahler's Ninth Symphony. Legendary conductor Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic join with the Swedish Radio Choir, the Eric Ericson Chamber Choir, and soloists Karita Mattila, Violeta Urmana, Thomas Moser, and Thomas Quasthoff for a world-class performance of Beethoven's Symphony No. Originally released in 2000, this performance was recorded live at the Philharmonic's own concert hall and stands as a classic yet.
Mahler Symphony No. 6. Claudio Abbado. An invisible thread runs between Claudio Abbado and the Second Symphony, "Resurrection" by Mahler. It is with this work that he made his debut with the London Symphony Orchestra and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna in Salzburg at the age of thirty-two and it is this symphony he decides to conduct in August 2003 in Lucerne, with the new orchestra that he helped revive, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.
