But before the born-agains jump on to the Fay bandwagon, they should be warned that the artist was equally influenced by the ravaging events of the day. The title track, "Time of the Last Persecution," was written in an immediate and visceral response to the killings of four students at Kent State.

The world weary lyricism and at times apocalyptic musical settings quickly set a mood that does not waver during the listeners experience. jazz enthusiasts and psych aficionados will likely walk away from a listen feeling enriched.

Time Of The Last Persecution. This song is by Bill Fay and appears on the album Time Of The Last Persecution (1971). I must stand by the side of the mountain I must be where I know I must be When you stand and face the gas masks and truncheons You must know what it all really means. It is the time of the last persecution And Caesar shall be raised He will ask for his feet to be kissed by your sister And your children will fear at his name.

Bill Fay is a singer-songwriter and pianist from London. Fay began writing songs in the early 1960s while attending university and in 1966 cut a demo using a mobile studio belonging to a man named John Boden. Impressed by the demo, ex-Them drummer Terry Noon helped Bill to sign a recording contract with Decca. In 1967 the label released the single "Some Good Advice"/"Screams in the Ears", produced by early Donovan co-manager Peter Eden. The self-titled Bill Fay was released in 1970 and was followed by Time Of The Last Persecution in 1971. Neither records sold well and Decca decided to end Bill’s contract shortly after the release of Time Of The Last Persecution. Bill had returned to the studio in the late 70s, but these sessions weren't released until January 2005 through Durtro/Jnana records as Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow under the moniker of the Bill Fay Group.
