heavy, ian went for a sound that crossed between hard rock, heavy metal and a bit of blues thrown in, mr universe was the first gillan record to hit shops in 1979 and it was the beggining of an awesome 3 year stretch for gillan putting out some of the most heavy stuff ian recorded outside of deep purple, this japan papersleeve sounds.

And he never sounded more Purple-ish than he does on Mr. Universe, which isn't quite on a par with Purple's Burn but is stronger than many of the albums the outfit had recorded after Gillan's departure (some of which were quite disappointing). This is Gillan at his most aggressive and passionately rockin'. Those with fond memories of his work with Purple will appreciate the testosterone-driven energy of "Vengeance," "Roller," and "Message in a Bottle. Headbangers shouldn't overlook this one.

A real surprise after the Jazz rock efforts before, but those of us who were lucky enough to find the eponymous Gillan album as a Japanese import knew what was in store. Fond memories of Purple 70-73 spring to mind, with Bernie Torme emulating Blackmore's aggressiveness and Colin Towns being quite different in sound from Jon Lord but equally competent. Thank God it got picked up by Virgin when Acrobat Records went broke, the Branson company was then rewarded with strong sales for the follow up albums and singles, especially in the UK. Highlights are the title track, Secret of the dance and Fighting Man. The CD adds a brutalized cover of Smoke on the water, brash and drunk in one take, simply massive..
