In 2004 Opera IX severely needed a major spin or a change not to starve while trying unsuccessfully to prove to be competent for the European metal market, and on Anphisbena (titled for a kind of animals half worms, half lizards) the changes came: the band recruited new singer Marco De Rosa and paid for some session musicians. Stop.Others may notice that, given the modern sheen of the band’s autoproduction work and the presence of Drop D tuning on "The Prophecy", the band would sound a bit more Black Metal than usual and relevant, finally. Unfortunately, it’s not. To be quite honest, while the sound is undoubtedly professional and untouchable, it deprives the band of personality. Worse, most of the tracks suffer because of this, since Opera IX are a band who live and die to recreate Mercyful Fate’s music as much and doubling the songs’ length to avoid comparisons with Cradle of Filth (comparisons that can’t be made in any case, especially considering that the British band is enormously better than the Italian one). Not hook-writers. For that get Forgotten Tomb: Opera IX are a band that couldn’t live without their niche. Take away the niche and see what remains of them. Anphisbena is an album that could change something, but the band decided not to change really anything, and that’s the frustrating part.Highlights: “Battle Cry”.
