Billy Joel gets a lot of song ideas in his dreams, and often struggles to remember them when he wakes up. For this song, however, he woke up with the song in his head, but tried NOT to write it. He explained on The Howard Stern Show in 2010: "I thought, Who the hell am I to try to pull off this gospel song, so I took a shower to wash this song away. I sang it in the shower and knew I had to do i. In Joel's dream, he was "walking in his sleep," which inspired that lyric

I've just been to see Billy at Wembley Stadium, London and he sounded better than ever. This album was his last studio album for the last 23 years apart from a classical inspired piano instrumental album. I think this is one of his stronger albums and far better crafted than his previous effort 'Storm Front'' 4 years previously. The album has a massive production from Danny Korchmar and is played by many top session musicians. This is Billy's rockiest album by far and the trademark piano sound is only present on a few tracks but most are guitar led rockers. It's well known that Billy had enough by this point and wasn't going to make records anymore so the last few songs show him winding down, especially on the last track. As usual all the songs are strong and it seems Billy doesn't do filler songs. Stand out songs are River of Dreams and All about Soul which still gives me chills.
It's a beautiful album like Nylon Curtain and The Bridge, my favorites , I don't understand people and critics. Especially Allmusic critic, why is wrong if all the songs are not easy listening and there is perfectionism by Billy . He put all himself in the lyrics and the singing. It's a real very underrated album and it's a glorious end for his career . Thank you Billy you are really like a brother to me more than a musician I listening. I met him once in Milan when he was playing for the press right to present this album and making a sort of lecture....I will never forget it.
Mysterious Wrench
Utter dross. The album cover should be warning enough.
Billy Joel the conceptualist had really been dreaming big over the last decade of his pop career. His melodic skills had diminished and that forced him to become a more serious and thoughtful songwriter. River Of Dreams adds to the Joel legacy of depth, as he looks back on a career of Boggs and lows. Throughout the record, he admits with tongue in cheek that he has nothing further to offer pop music and therefore these are his last words he can give us as a pop star. Key tracks are No Man's Land, All About Soul, and Famous Last Words.
