Hope and dread, Simon once said, that’s the way I see the world. The two states of mind clash fervently on his fourth solo album, a premature reflection on his regrets – he was only 34. Fifty Ways to Leave Your Lover, though, is deliciously silly. Paul Simon: 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover – video. 7. Stranger to Stranger (2016). 4. Paul Simon (1972). There are a few intriguingly scruffy moments on Simon’s first post-Garfunkel album. On Everything Put Together Falls Apart, he turns from the microphone halfway through a line to scratch his beard, as if so deep in thought he has forgotten he is recording. It is fitting for an album of such candid introspection – although there are lighter moments, such as the samba-influenced Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard. 3. Paul Simon is one of the greatest singer/songwriters ever. Following the disbandment of Simon and Garfunkel, he went on to enjoy a successful solo career. Though he had a string of hits in the '70s, Graceland (1986) may be his most distinguished work - based on South African sounds, it helped popularize the world music genre. If you want to know the best Paul Simon album of all time, this list will answer your question. Albums range from There Goes Rhymin' Simon (1973) to Still Crazy After All These Years (1975) to Surprise (2006). Photo: Metaweb (FB)/Public domain.
The pair split later that year. Paul Simon (1972) In the wake of Bridge’s massive success and deliberate grandeur, the first album of Simon’s new solo career seemed musically spare and more modest in reach. But its expansive geniality – the warming-reggae optimism of Mother and Child Reunion, recorded in Jamaica; the adolescent vigor and spindly Hispanic bounce of Me and Julio Down by the Schoolyard – was perfect pop in design and delivery. Still Crazy After All These Years (1975) Just as he caught his generation in song as it owned the Sixties, Simon captured its contradictions in middle.
