Rachmaninov: Symphonic Dances, The Isle of the Dead, The Rock.
This Naïve album presents two such works: Prokofiev's Second Violin Concerto and Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances. Violinist Geneviève Laurenceau's performance of the Prokofiev is technically dazzling and musically fulfilling. She captures the two contrasting melodic moods well, from the harsh, angular, gritty chords of the finale to the sweet, luxurious second theme of the opening movement. Even the extremely high, piercing theme of the middle movement - which can easily come across as shrill - is played with tenderness and warmth.
Prokofiev: Violin Concerto No. 2; Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances.
The unusual coupling of Prokofiev’s Second Violin Concerto displays the same virtues. The slow movement’s tender melody is spun out effectively by Laurenceau. This young Strasbourg-born violinist made her reputation in chamber music. She plays the tough moments of this concerto accurately, but has neither the heft nor the sheer personality of its greatest exponents Heifetz and Oistrakh. The disc is recommended primarily for Sokhiev’s interpretative insights in the Symphonic Dances.
The Symphonic Dances, Op. 45, is an orchestral suite in three movements. Completed in 1940, it is Sergei Rachmaninoff's last composition. The Symphonic Dances allowed him to indulge in a nostalgia for the Russia he had known, much as he had done in the Third Symphony, as well as to effectively sum up his lifelong fascination with ecclesiastical chants. In the first dance, he quotes the opening theme of his First Symphony, itself derived from motifs characteristic of Russian church music.
