Konishiki, KMS is definitely what you would call niche marketing. The album is targeted at those underrepresented fans of both sumo wrestling and hip-hop. Not exactly a growing demographic, but nobody's going to stop Konishiki from trying. When you're a 6'3", 600-pound champion sumo wrestler, odds are you can make rap albums or do anything else you want to and no one will stop you. No doubt Konishiki's considerable girth, not to mention his fame, earned him a record deal. What's scary is that this relative novice provides some passable West Coast hip-hop.

Konishiki Yasokichi (小錦八十吉 Konishiki Yasokichi, born Saleva'a Fuauli Atisano'e; December 31, 1963) is a Hawaiian-born Japanese-Samoan former sumo wrestler. He was the first non-Japanese-born wrestler to reach ōzeki, the second-highest rank in the sport. During his career he won the top division championship on three occasions and came close to becoming the first foreign-born grand champion, or yokozuna, prompting a debate as to whether a foreigner could have the necessary cultural understanding to be acceptable in sumo's ultimate rank. Many people expected Konishiki to quickly make his push for yokozuna promotion. His stablemaster, the 46th Yokozuna Asashio Tarō III had predicted Konishiki would reach the top rank by his 25th birthday

His new rap persona is Konishiki KMS, an acronym for Konishiki Master Sumo, and he says he’s also trying to whittle down his big frame to suit his new incarnation. Sumo is a big man’s sport. Before joining sumo, I was always big, says Konishiki. But I learned how to move my weight and work with my weight over the years. Now I’m trying to get healthy, trying to lose some weight. Konishiki weighed 640 pounds when he retired from the sport three years ago and is down to 560 pounds today. I don’t think I’d be comfortable being too small, he says  . I think it’s a pretty good album, he says. It was one of my dreams to get it out, so wherever it goes I’m happy with that.
