On this Smalltown Supersound EP, Tokyo's Nisennenmondai move past post-punk talking points and pay more attention to their songs. For Neji/Tori, their 2008 introduction to America, Tokyo's Nisennenmondai wore their influences on their track list. With songs named after the Pop Group, Sonic Youth, and This Heat, and cuts that careened from freak-out to free jazz, Neji/Tori was an explicit homage to the band's points of origin. This five-song EP, Destination Tokyo, is about where those influences may take them. Detailed and more cleanly recorded, it's as if the trio are demanding listeners move past the confrontations and comforts of post-punk talking points and pay more attention the songs.
Unlike Neji/Tori, Destination Tokyo doesn't have any songs named for the bands Nisenennmondai admires, and with good reason: these focused yet still unpredictable excursions are utterly theirs. The trio dives even deeper into the grooves that drive their music, expanding them and streamlining them into something challenging yet fresh and immediate.
Nisennenmondai: Destination Tokyo by AAJ Italy Staff, published on September 3, 2009. Se dovessimo aggiungere qualche tag all'immagine delle giapponesi Nisennenmondai che emerge da questo Destination Tokyo potremmo certamente annotare le parole chiave: krautrock, ipnosi, ripetizione, nevrosi.
But Tyondai Braxton & co are surely allowed some narcissism, and the three hyperactive chicks of Nisennenmondai deserve the endorsement. ijeN urusuozuoS' (or, well, 'Souzousuru Neji') is like a 30-second intro of any given Battles song, strung out into a black hole and turned into a 13-minute beast of nervous tension. This feeling is best typified, not surprisingly, in 'Mirrorball', the most melodic of the four proper tracks on Destination Tokyo (the fifth being the little brother of 'Mirrorball', 'Miraabouru', which consists of what one presumes are girls' voices, sped up into infantile pitches in imitative a cappella).
