Or to put it more bluntly, the Kempf Trio's scorched earth approach to performing does not illuminate Beethoven's serene Trio in B flat major as much as it burns it to the ground. The opening Allegro moderato is too allegro and not enough moderato, the following Scherzo is far too con brio and not enough con amiable, the following Andante cantabile is far too allegretto and nowhere near enough cantabile, and the closing Allegro moderato is once again too allegro and not even remotely enough moderato.

The Piano Trio in B-flat major, Op. 97, by Ludwig van Beethoven is a piano trio completed in 1811. It is commonly referred to as the Archduke Trio, because it was dedicated to Archduke Rudolph of Austria, the youngest of twelve children of Leopold II, Holy Roman Emperor. Rudolf was an amateur pianist and a patron, friend, and composition student of Beethoven. Beethoven dedicated a total of fourteen compositions to the Archduke, who dedicated one of his own to Beethoven in return.
The expressive worlds of the C minor trio Op 1 no 3 and the Op 97 Archduke Trio are far apart - the earlier work is Haydnesque in its grammar, while the later one is caught on the cusp of late Beethoven - yet the Kempf Trio never really make that distinction. The playing is admirable, though the final result turns out to be less than the sum of its parts.
The Beethoven Archduke Piano Trio O. 7 and Piano Trio O. N. on this SACD-DSD recording from Bis, clears its way right to the top few in an already crowded competition and not only because of its sonic supremacy but also because of its intense, emotional, yet agile reading.

Album including Album cover Booklet (PDF). Formats & Prices. 97 ('Archduke') & Op. 3. How lovely that GENUIN repeatedly gives in to its hankering for the serial novel genre: For the classical label’s new collaboration with Trio Ex Aequo bearing the title Beethoven will make listeners hope for more. From the stately introductory phrases of the Archduke Trio all the way to the brooding final notes of the wild early work of the young iconoclast from Bonn, this production is convincing because of its long, sustained phrasing, tonal beauty and its unique reading of the recorded works.
