You Were a Diamond" is Clem Snide's first album. They bring a lo-fi sensibility to roots rock. The songs have a rough edge, and the use of strings reinforces the New Americana sound. You can also sense Clem Snide pushing the boundries like the almost experimental sounds at the beginning of 'Fruit Salad Stains'. The dirgelike accoustics of this album unfortunately make listening to it more than a couple of times a very trying experience. Unfortunately the songs aren't good enough to carry without the missing musical assistance. The effect is that you listen to the album once or twice say "that's nice" and never put it on your CD player again.
