Alf' is the debut album by Alison Moyet. Released on the 5th November 1984 the album was recorded at the Odyssey Studios, London. Moyet had recently signed with Columbia Records following the demise of the influential band Yazoo. The public's expectations of Moyet had been raised so Moyet teamed up with the songwriter and producer duo Steve Jolley and Tony Swain. Swain and Jolly had been having success with other bands such as Imagination (Body Talk), Spandau Ballet (True) and Bananarama (Shy Boy and Cruel Summer) and set to work with Moyet on recording her solo album.
In 1987 Moyet’s second album, Raindancing (. /10) followed on where Alf had left off but with a slightly less poppy feel despite spawning four hit singles, two of which reached the top 10 – album opener Weak In The Presence Of Beauty (written and originally recorded by Floy Joy) and Is This Love? penned with Jean Guiot who would later b. Four years passed before a new Alison Moyet appeared in the shape of Hoodoo (8/10). It marked the beginning of an acrimonious relationship with label Sony who wanted to shape her further into the pop mould whilst she wanted to further follow her roots and influences. Whist it was critically acclaimed, including a Grammy nomination for lead single It Won’t Be Long, Sony refused to promote the album which no was no doubt the cause of This House being the highest performing of four single reaching number 40.
Alison Moyet's solo debut moves away from the all-electronic backing of her two-album partnership with Vince Clarke in Yaz, but ironically, those two albums sound much less dated in retrospect than Alf itself. Hooking up with Bananarama's producers, Tony Swain and Steve Jolley, Moyet delivers an enormous, walloping mid-'80s pop sound that constantly threatens to overwhelm both the songs, which are a mixed bag, and occasionally even the formidably voiced singer herself
Alf is the debut solo studio album of British singer-songwriter Alison Moyet, her first since leaving early 1980s synthpop duo Yazoo (also known as Yaz). Released on 9 November 1984, the album, which took its title from the singer's nickname, went to No. 1 on both the UK and New Zealand album charts and includes three hit singles; "Love Resurrection", "Invisible" and "All Cried Out". The summer of 1985 saw the release of the non-album single "That Ole Devil Called Love", originally performed by Billie Holiday in the 1940s.
You can purchase this album from. It is always said for a lyric to wor. s simple as it may b. .it has to be sung like you mean it. On Alf, my production team always wanted me to be singing at the very top of my range. That I could make a big noise was milked. It is often received that yelling equals angst. The singing experience then becomes one of physical exertion alone. That passion gets read into is a mirage. My vocal on All Cried Out is one of the better ones on Alf but I lost my enjoyment of it through years of performing it. The vocal in his recording has an honesty. It reminds me what I liked about.
