This eight-CD set does indeed have all 17 of trumpeter Miles Davis' Prestige sessions. Most significant are the many performances by Davis' classic quintet of 1955-1956 with tenor saxophonist John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones but there are also dates featuring Sonny Rollins, Charlie Parker (on tenor), Thelonious Monk, Milt Jackson, Jackie McLean, Lee Konitz, Lucky Thompson, and .

Some of Miles Davis's most treasured recordings or showcased here. - Where did they go wrong. I wish that back in the late 80s and early 90s they would've put the Altered takes. I will say that any lover of modern jazz from the 1970's should listen to the reissue of the Colrane recordings on Prestige. It is important to note that this set is missing some material that has previously been on Prestige. There are some sides with Lee Konitz from around 1949-1950.

October 26, 1956 Miles Davis (tpt); John Coltrane (ts); William "Red" Garland (p); Paul Chambers (b); Philly Joe Jones (d). About this release. Thanks to snobb for the addition.

MILES DAVIS QUINTET: The Great Prestige Recordings Includes: The New Miles Davis Quintet, Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', Steamin' Miles Davis, trumpet; John Coltrane, tenor sax; Red Garland, piano; Paul Chambers, bass; Philly Joe Jones, drums. Analogue Productions APJ 035 (5 LPs). Bob Weinstock, original prod. Politics, religion, and whether or not Kind of Blue is really the best jazz album ever made. Religions have been based on much less than the illuminations to be found in the Davis catalog. This closeness also made them a natural choice for a boxed set (the previous Prestige box, Chronicle: The Complete Prestige Recordings, 1951-1956, covers everything Miles recorded for the label), a circumstance that Chad Kassem of Analogue Productions must be commended for finally spotting. None of the five albums stands out as the unquestioned winner.

The Legendary Prestige Quintet Sessions is a four compact disc box set of recordings by the Miles Davis Quintet released in 2006 by the Concord Music Group. It collates on three discs the entire set of recordings that made up the Prestige Records albums released from 1956 through 1961 - Miles, Cookin', Relaxin', Workin', and Steamin'. The track "'Round Midnight" was released on the album Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants
