However, while the old shows may be legendary, the new ones aren't bad either, and the above isn't meant to say that Live at the Quick is a bad album; actually, there's plenty of stuff that Flecktones fans love, including Wooten's now-trademark arrangement of "Amazing Grace" and a Bach "Prelude" from Fleck's classical music projects. The concert was recorded with the Flecktone Big Band and features guest appearances from Paul McCandless, Andy Narell, Paul Hansen, tabla player Sandip Burman, and Tuvan throat singer Congar ol'Ondar.

All in all, this is a superb live performance, and it has a nearly endless amount of replay value. The only thing that might turn people off would be the Alash River Song performed by Kongar-ool Ondar. Kongar does not really play an instrument. Instead, he uses both sets of vocal chords at once to produce a sound that is almost akin to a flute, and while I find it interesting and a joy to listen to, some people might find it off putting. This is an album that is listenable under almost any circumstances.
The Flecktones' previous concert set, the two-disc "Live Art," debuted at No. 4 on Billboard's Top Contemporary Jazz Albums chart in September 1996. Barry A. Jeckell, . Bela Fleck & the Flecktones will release "Live at the Quick" Feb. 12 on CD and DVD via Columbia. Recorded across two shows at the Quick Center for the Arts in Fairfield, Conn. the album features Fleck and the core group of Flecktones - bassist Victor Wooten, percussionist Futureman, and saxophonist Jeff Coffin, as well as a handful of guest musicians. In addition, "Live at the Quick" will be seen as "Freeview" feature throughout January on the DirecTV satellite television service. The concert program is set to premiere Jan 1. Look for the group on tour in the . beginning Feb. 26 in Johnson, Vt. Seven dates in Australia, followed by a lone show in Japan, kick off March 29.
Only 3 left in stock (more on the way). Most of the tracks come from the "Outbound" CD and use many of the same musicians from that album in the live concert. The tunes from the CD translate very well to a live setting. Fleck is also not afraid to rework arrangements to give them a new and fresh sound. The musicianship on this DVD is nothing short of world class. For those of you who are not familiar with the Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, their music is a bit hard to classify. Perhaps the best description might be "world music with a jazz emphasis". This DVD features musicians who are top players in their field.
