Huey Lewis and the News is the debut album by American rock band Huey Lewis and the News, released in 1980. In 1979, the band's name was Huey Lewis and the American Express. Under this name they released a single and secured their recording contract with Chrysalis Records at the end of the year. The album was recorded within three weeks and the producer was Bill Schnee, who had produced for Boz Scaggs and Pablo Cruise.

Small World was another platinum hit for Huey Lewis & the News, but the album was noticeably weaker than their previous three records. Lewis tries to position himself as a socially conscious rocker - no less than three tracks have the word "world" in their title - writing songs about the perilous state of the environment and urging everybody to live together peacefully, since "there ain't no livin' in a perfect world. Such sanctimonious and simple lyrical platitudes would be acceptable if the band had written a set of catchy pop to support them

This album will leave the listener undoubtedly disappointed in such a great band's performance. It seemed as though the album was written around the four good songs, and the rest is just filler. Huey Lewis had six members when it recorded this album and they out put the sound of two and a half. Namely on "World To Me" all I could hear was Huey singing, a drummer doing a very a basic beat and the bass player doing all of the rest. To top that off there are three instrumental songs on the album. I can understand having one or two, but three just seems lazy compared to what was accomplished on Sports. The good songs fortified in the dispair of the rest of the album were "Old Antone's" ( rather carnival like, in which the band out puts sound like its former self), "Perfect World" (which was not written by the group), and "Give Me The Keys" (maybe I'm odd for liking this track, for I can justify no other reason). All in all the album seems like it could have been better, had the right amount of time been put into it. Yet it is what it is earning a disappointing two and a half stars.
