Mansa Musa, or Musa I of Mali is considered one of the richest people ever. Musa was the tenth emperor of the Mali Empire, one of the prosperous Sahelian kingdoms that developed along the Saharan slave trade routes in the later medieval period. Mansa Musa made his fortune by exploiting his country's salt and gold production. Musa is said to have brought several tonnes of gold to Mecca when he made a pilgrimage there in 1324, deflating the value of gold across much, if not all, of North Africa  .

The debate about who the richest man never range far from Jeff Bezos, Bill Gate and Warren Buffet. However, these men’s wealth cannot hold a candle to Mansa Musa whose extravagance was so much that it wrecked a country. They sailed off but never to return  . Musa was not just extremely wealthy, he was excessively generous. He gave to the poor and to cities along his route. In Cairo, where he stayed for three months, he gave out so much gold that the price of gold plummeted for 10 years. Musa returned from Mecca in 1325.

Mansa Musa I was the ruler of the Mali Empire in West Africa from 1312 to 1337 CE. Controlling territories rich in gold and copper, as well. Mansa Musa’s 1324 CE stopover in Cairo, though, would spread Mali’s fame even further and on to Europe where tall tales of this king’s fabulous wealth in gold began to stir the interest of traders and explorers. Mansa Musa, the Mali Empire’s greatest ever ruler, was said to have spent so much gold in the markets of the Egyptian city that the value of bullion crashed by 20%. The Mali Empire. The Mali Empire (1240-1645 CE), the largest and richest empire yet seen in West Africa, was founded by Sundiata Keita (aka Sunjaata, r. 1230-1255 CE).
