Andy Friedman performs "Weary Things" at WNRN in Charlottesville, Virginia on December 11, 2009 before his show at The Southern.
On his second album since he picked up a guitar and began making the transition from an illustrator and cartoonist to a singer/songwriter, Andy Friedman still isn't taking himself or his new profession too seriously, and his music is all the better for it. The title Weary Things signals that much of the material is taken at a loose, easy pace, as if performed during a well-lubricated second set in a nightclub near closing time
Weary Things, Andy's sophomore album of original songs. 2009, City Salvage Records). Andy Friedman, Hotel Utah Saloon (San Francisco, CA) 2008. Friedman-a cartoonist turned musician-is a sort of mechanical bull: a gruff-snorting beast restricted to a few simple moves but capable of more than a few gut-busting surprises. With Weary Things, Friedman sharpens his horns and starts to throw his weight around. The Brooklyn bull’s second proper album and first with his committed ranch hands, the Other Failures, still busts buckaroo balls, but does something a bit more interesting for listeners that hang on for the ride. Weary Things shows more of Friedman in the music; it plays out like the biography of a beaten animal, rocked hard and.
A daily reminder that Andy Friedman was here, once upon a time, is the print of Larry David that he drew and gave us, which is propped against my desk and the wall, at the studio - right next to the scribbled rabbit in a rainstorm that my oldest daughter made. It's a profile of David, with an exaggerated head and a tiny torso, looking as if he were about to spew about this thing or that which ruffles his feathers and gets his goat.
Andy Friedman began in the world of art and illustration, and later moved into music. Born in Brooklyn, he graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with a . Taking up the guitar and singing, he then recorded his first studio album, Taken Man, released on June 4, 2007. Weary Things followed on January 27, 2009.
You could easily mistake Brooklyn-born Andy Friedman for yet another aging hipster with a Tom Waits fixation. But behind the soul patch and porkpie hat there’s a more complicated character. Friedman is a visual artist (he made his name as a New Yorker illustrator), and his initial forays into music were spoken-word riffs on the life of an artist. This experimental and philosophical tone informs Weary Things, his second album
His follow-up, Weary Things, made the Associated Press’s Best Overlooked Albums of 2009 list. What’s more, indie-folk kid Sufjan Stevens has gushed that I think the world of Andy Friedman. I’ve always wanted to be Andy Freidman. A pretty bold statement, considering that I always wanted to be Sufjan Stevens. Well, at least before he largely dropped the banjo music from his repertoire. Laserbeams and Dreams is about as caffeinated a country-cum-folk album as you’re going to hear.
Terrible Things is the debut album by alternative rock supergroup Terrible Things. The lineup during the recording consisted of former Taking Back Sunday guitarist and The Color Fred lead vocalist Fred Mascherino, guitarist and vocalist Andy Jackson from Hot Rod Circuit, and drummer Josh Eppard from Coheed and Cambria fame. Lullaby" was originally a song by Mascherino's former group Breaking Pangaea, and "Terrible Things" was originally a song by The Color Fred, Mascherino's solo project.
