Following the breakup of the original Human League lineup, Philip Oakey took control of the band and transformed their once-abrasive synth-pop into chart-topping hits on Dare. The band’s robotic, stylised rhythms collide with irrefutably catchy tunes on Love Action (I Believe In Love) and Don’t You Want Me, two of New Wave’s most winning singles. With layers of baroque, buzzing synths, Darkness and Do or Die delve into the band’s goth side, but the soaring Open Your Heart reveals the sensitive soul beneath their mannequin makeup. The album was produced by Martin Rushent and The Human League, and recorded at Rushent's Genetic Sound studios near Reading, Berkshire between March and September 1981. It was released in the UK on 16 October 1981. Dare remains the group's most successful and best known album and has been re-issued several times since 1981 in various formats. Travelogue is the second full-length studio album released by British synthpop group The Human League, released in May 1980. For Travelogue, the band worked with a new co-producer, Richard Mainwaring, who went on to produce OMD's platinum selling Architecture & Morality the following year. Travelogue entered the UK album chart at which was also its chart peak, and remained on the chart for 9 weeks in 1980.

Dare (released as Dare! in the US) is the third studio album by British synthpop band The Human League, first released in the UK on 16 October 1981 then subsequently in the US in mid-1982. The album was recorded between March and September 1981 following the departure of founding members Martyn Ware and Ian Craig Marsh, and saw the band shift direction from their prior avant-garde electronic style toward a more pop-friendly, commercial sound led by frontman Philip Oakey.
