Scottish composer William Sweeney has kept the cello at the core of his compositional output, capturing the instrument’s human qualities, and in turn the instrument has inspired some of his most impassioned and elegant works. The Sonata for Cello and Piano won a 2011 British Composer Award in the Instrumental Solo or Duo category: this piece and the others on this release are world premiere recordings made in collaboration with the composer.

Now in his early 60s, William Sweeney is a clarinettist, conductor and academic (currently professor of music at Glasgow University) besides being a composer, and the influences on his own music have been as wide-ranging as his musical activities.

Info for William Sweeney: Tree o' Licht. Both musically impassioned and socially engaged, William Sweeney’s music is at its most eloquent when voiced by that most human of instruments, the cello. The player navigates a stormy electronic landscape in the Borges-inspired The Poet Tells of his Fame, while Schumann lies behind the powerfully argued Sonata for Cello and Piano, recipient of a 2011 BASCA British Composer Award. Robert Irvine was born in Glasgow, and at the age of 16 was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Music where he studied with Christopher Bunting and Amaryllis Fleming. Whilst there he won most of the major prizes in chamber music and solo playing. On leaving the Royal College, he went on to further studies with William Pleeth and Pierre Fournier before joining the Philharmonia as sub principal cello.

Andy Irvine sang "Willy O'Winsbury" on Sweeney's Men's eponymous debut album in 1968, accompanying himself on guitar. The recording featured the tune of "Fause Foodrage" (Child 89), which is now commonly used for "Willie O' Winsbury". On the album's sleeve notes, band member Johnny Moynihan wrote, "A ballad for which Andy is renowned. He got the text from Child's 'English and Scottish Ballads'; looking up the tune he got his numbers confused and emerged with the wrong air. By chance it suited the song very well".
