Longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere shortest (winter solstice) in the Southern Hemisphere. Local times worldwide. The point on the horizon where the sun appears to rise and set, stops and reverses direction after this day. On the solstice, the sun does not rise precisely in the east, but rises to the north of east and sets to the north of west, meaning it's visible in the sky for a longer period of time. Although the June solstice marks the first day of astronomical summer, it's more common to use meteorological definitions of seasons, making the solstice midsummer or midwinter. Over the centuries, the June solstice has inspired countless festivals, midsummer celebrations and religious holidays. One of the world's oldest evidence of the summer solstice's importance in culture is Stonehenge in England, a megalithic structure which clearly marks the moment of the June solstice.
From Midsummer to Midwinter, the days are getting shorter, and from Midwinter to Midsummer, they are getting longer (again, all this is Northern Hemisphere stuff). Now, one could say that the two seasons are those that see shorter and shorter days and longer and longer days. Thank you for your feedback!

Got a question? Post it in our forum!x. Dancing, feasting, drinking and a seemingly endless supply of sunlight: there’s a lot to like about Midsummer in Sweden. With the possible exception of the weeks leading up to Christmas, the other big festival on the Swedish calendar, it’s the best time of year to be a foreign visitor in the country. Pic: Bengt Nyman (CC). Midsummer – or midsommar – is still a huge deal across Sweden, with people young and old getting together to celebrate, either at large community events or smaller gatherings of friends and family
Midsummer is the period of time centered upon the summer solstice, and more specifically the northern European celebrations that accompany the actual solstice or take place on a day between June 19 and June 25 and the preceding evening. The exact dates vary between different cultures. The celebration predates Christianity, and existed under different names and traditions around the world.
Puck, also known as Robin Goodfellow, is a character in William Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream, based on the ancient figure of Puck found in English mythology. Puck is a clever, mischievous fairy, sprite, or jester. He is the first of the main fairy characters to appear, and creates the drama of the human lovers' story by splitting up a young couple lost in an enchanted forest.
Midsummer may be the most typically Swedish tradition of all. It's June, Sweden is in full bloom and friends and family gather to celebrate, sing and dance. Queues of cars stretch away into the distance, and at the end of the road, family and friends wait among silver birches in full, shimmering bloom. Maypoles and dancing. Midsummer is an occasion of large gatherings − and to be honest, many Swedes take advantage of it to fulfil their social obligations so that they can enjoy the rest of their holiday in peace. In many cases, whole families gather to celebrate this traditional high-point of the summer.
