The Violin Concerto in A minor, Op. 53 (. 08), is a concerto for violin and orchestra composed by Antonín Dvořák in 1879. It was premiered in Prague in 1883 by František Ondříček, who also gave the Vienna and London premieres. Today it remains an important work in the violin repertoire. The concerto is scored for solo violin and an orchestra consisting of 2 flutes, 2 oboes 2 clarinets (in A), 2 bassoons, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, timpani, and strings.

The Germans have four violin concertos. The greatest, most uncompromising is Beethoven's. The one by Brahms vies with it in seriousness. For instance, Brahms has the violin enter with the timpani after the orchestral introduction: this is a clear homage to Beethoven, whose violin concerto also makes unusual use of the timpani. Brahms conducted the premiere. Various modifications were made between then and the work's publication by Fritz Simrock later in the year

Dvořák’s Violin Concerto is the pinnacle of his ‘Slavic period’. Brahms’ Symphony no. 2 lets you hear the composer’s self-confidence and sunny mood. Schubert - Ouverture 'Die Zauberharfe', D 644. Dvořák - Violin Concerto in A minor, op. 53. Brahms - Symphony No. 2 in D major, op. 73. This concert has an intermission. Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest.
