Buell Neidlinger - Thelonious Atmosphere mp3 download

Thelonious Atmosphere. Released: January 1, 2001.

Bassist Buell Neidlinger (who played with everyone from Rex Stewart to Cecil Taylor and Stravinsky) and tenor saxophonist Marty Krystall have always been real sticklers when it comes to interpreting Thelonious Monk's music. They believe in playing Monk's songs with the correct melody and original chords, and not discarding the theme once the solos start. In the 1980s, they co-led the group Thelonious, which exclusively performed Monk's compositions, emphasizing the lesser-known songs. This CD has two previously unreleased performances from that era.

On Thelonious Atmosphere, culled from a live recording and a live radio broadcast on the Santa Monica-based KCRW, the song set digs into lesser-known Monk tunes, including Jackie-ing, Locomotive and Trinkle, Tinkle. Also, Neidlinger points out, You’re hearing four- and five-minute performances, instead of 15-minute jobbies. I had this band Thelonious for a few years. Our first album came out, with John Beasley-Monkoy Tyner, Neidlinger teases. You know, Beasley went out with Miles Davis. After a few weeks out, he started to tie Beasley’s left hand behind his back.

Reflections (subtitled Steve Lacy Plays Thelonious Monk) is the second album by Steve Lacy which was released on the Prestige label in 1959. It features performances of Thelonious Monk's compositions by Lacy, Mal Waldron, Buell Neidlinger and Elvin Jones. According to biographer Robin Kelley, this was the first album devoted entirely to Monk's music recorded by another artist.
